An early Victorian giant double fusee carriage clock made by Arnold & Chas. Frodsham, 84 Strand, London, the longest continuously trading firm of chronometer manufacturers in the world, synonymous with precision timekeeping instruments, fetched £28,600 (including all taxes and charges).
The age of the 21 cm high timepiece, its rarity and relative good condition attracted much attention as soon as the catalogue was launched online from dealers and collectors, eventually selling to the London trade from a relatively low pre sale estimate of £400-800. In comparison, the previous lot in the auction from the same vendor, a regular size repeater carriage clock of the same vintage in good working order, made just £85.
The result bucks the generally poor market in recent years for all type of clocks with the advent of the ubiquitous smartphone. This clock came from a recent deceased estate in the Reading area.
Other highlights included two similar late Victorian five-stone diamond rings, each making £5,200; a gold flat curb-link Albert watch chain with four gold fobs fetched £4,600; a Victorian 18ct gold-cased pocket watch got away for £2,200 and a collection of Royal Order of Antediluvian Buffaloes (ROAB) medals and regalia, all from one recipient in the 1950/60s went to a private collector for £2,300.
